Over the last week, both Microsoft and Google had interesting product announcements that could impact the way sites are developed, how we collaborate, and ultimately how we engage the marketplace.
Microsoft’s new version of their Live search engine, Bing, is being described (by Microsoft) as a Decision Engine. It remains to be seen whether this focus on helping people make better decisions, specifically in vertical areas like trip planning and purchasing, will translate into a shift in the way search is used. With the recent announcement of Bing, they also launched a new community site for developers and webmasters that is a great starting point for keeping up to date and getting up to speed on Bing.
Google Wave on the other hand is a new communications platform that is built from the ground up to “take advantage of computers' current abilities, rather than imitating non-electronic forms” (from the Google blog). At the core is an open API that enables you to embed waves into web services or extend the functionality of waves. You can check out the Google Wave site to find out more about it, access the APIs and learn about the underlying protocols.
Whether either of these go anywhere or just die on the vine, like any number of Microsoft or Google projects, will be borne out over the coming months and years. Either way, there are a lot of interesting ideas here than can be used to help develop applications and tools that enable our businesses to be more focused on the right ways to interact with our customers/users.

Re: New Products: Microsoft Bing and Google Wave
It's a more holistic approach that really intends to replace a group of disparate communication mediums (e.g., e-mail, im, web services, blog, video, audio, ...) with one platform. It's open and can be adopted by anyone, like the e-mail protocol has been. Their goal is to provide a protocol or platform that supports the ways we want to communicate, without limiting them the way e-mail does for example. E-mail wasn't meant for passing objects like video or audio and isn't suited to instant communication.
